6XC Load Data

#1 Postby Redhawk » Sun Mar 04, 2018 9:16 pm

Hi All

I am havimg a 6XC built on a Defiance Action with a 28” 1:8 Bartlein barrel for PRS amd the occasional F Open stint.

Planning on using 103-107grn with Norma brass. Best powders out there ? Any loads or other tips to share?

Just had my AI AW rebarrelled to 6XC. I’ve used Berger 108’s and AR2209. Here is what I’ve found to date with only about 60 rounds down the tube Bartlein 1:7.5” 26”:
Did a load work up from 39gr AR2209 to 41gr. 3 rounds each at .3gr increments gave me good (<.3”) groups up to 39.9gr with things going downhill accuracy wise from there up with typical signs of high pressures at 41gr. Backed off to 39.5gr and all seems good for the time being-l. Still need to play around with seating depth but 2 x 5 round groups at about .5” to end the day. It was about 35°C with a light but fish tailing wind. Groups were flat with a bit of a horizontal ‘wind report’. I guess with .7gr more powder (than the last time I shot it @2900fps) and a few more rounds down the tube I should be getting around 3050fps once the barrel speeds up which is fine. I was shooting with an Atlas bipod and lightweight, field type rear bag as I use this rifle for practical rifle type comps.
Chamber is a vanilla no turn 6XC reamer which I believe is designed for reformed 22-250 brass but with a few reloads on some Norma brass I’m yet to see any of the tight fit issues which apparently plague Norma brass users.

Regards,
Michael

I also have an AI AT with a 26" 6XC barrel. AR2209 works best at around 40g with Norma brass for 105 berger Hybrid. My favourite load is the 115g DTAC with slightly less powder. Some in the US prefer Reloader 17 http://www.6mmbr.com/reloder17.html but I hear it is a but temperature sensitive.

2209 seems to be the universally accepted best powder for the 6XC, I'll be finding out later in the year myself as I have two rifles awaiting Mr Paroz's expertise in being chambered up. Bully_eye posts some good info, personally I'll be starting in the high 38s and working up to about 40gr, I don't see a need to really hot rod this cartridge and I'm confident there will be a node between 39-40gr.

Mine is 1/7.75T 30" barrel chambered for 115 Dtacs, they were coated. I used 2213sc & 2209 with both powders producing excellent results. for 115 Dtacs (coated)a little over 44gns of 2213sc.
for 2209, 115 Dtacs 41.5gns, 109 Bergers 40.5, for 105 Bergers 38.5gns.
The barrel i have shoots all of these pills very well with all speeds in excess of 3000fps. Barrel has done over 1400 rounds and looks very good still. The chamber was touched up at 1100 rounds.
These are not "go to" loads so please work up your own for your barrel.

Remember too the VERY good temperature tolerance range of 2209/H4350 is I believe a reason it's become so popular. If ya like me you probably don't spend enough time on the load testing so ya never absolutely totally sure what place in the accuracy node the load is so a temp change can push u out. At least thats true for our climate I reckon.

Gee whiz, that is fantastic info guys! I really appreciate it!

Any indication of which of the primers serves best? Also how many reloads do you get out of the Norma brass?

Redhawk, I had toast for breakfast. Anyway, my original purchase was 200 Norma XC brass, they are going strong, no PP issues and haven't trimmed them yet.probably loaded them 6-7 times so far.
Also bought 100 Lap 22-250 brass and fire formed those. They are slightly smaller capacity and smaller size overall, they extract well but different to the Norma. I also have a Defiance Rebel so similar rig but you may struggle with anything larger than Berger 109gn pills with the 8T barrel. Try 105's VLD's they really hammer at 3100fps +
Primers, I used Fed GMM with great success and CCI Br2's, everything worked, it's a very forgiving Cal combination.

Also bear in mind there will be more brass options in a few months time, with Peterson brass doing the 6XC with both small and large primer pockets. I've been advised this brass could be on sale from May.

107 Sierra 39,2 2209 2.720 OAL which is about .040 in above neck shoulder junction .Should do some chronographing and load testing but not enough hours in the week.

I'm sticking with 105s for this cartridge, although in the early days of load development, 2209 is proving disappointing with loads tried from 38.8 to 40gr and I cant get an SD below 10 so I'm going to try alternative powders.
