6.5x284 load data

#1 Postby BATattack » Thu Mar 01, 2018 8:52 pm

I've had a bit of a fun gun built on a tikka action, 26" barrel with a short (standard) throat length.

I have a few 130gr bergers laying around that I might try for long range with some 95gr vmax for other duties.

I know the majority of shooters who used this Cal in the hay day would have used 140s but would anyone have some thoughts on using 2209 or 2217 and load data for a 130gr?

Hi BATattack,

I would use 2209, 2217 would be to slow for 140's let alone 130's, you would have to run compressed loads. In my 6.5x47 Lap Imp I shoot 2008 with 140's. Also in my 6.5 SLR (260 case) I am running 140's with 43.1 grs of 2209 at 2885 fps. I also shoot 151 gr Warners in my 7mm 284w with 53.0 gr of 2209 at 2950 fps. Think you would want to start at around 46.5 gr of 2209 with 140's which would put you close to 2800fps and 47.5 gr for 130's and work your way up, most people feel the 6.5x284 is a barrel burner if run hot and they were pushing 140's well over 3000 fps.

Good idea BATattack my 6.5x284 barrel will soon be on a fun gun. Gonna chop it to 22" and suppress it and probably run the 130 TMK's for bunnies.

Now I read that 2217/H1000 is used successfully by some in the 6.5x284. I ran 49 grains of 2209 for 3k fps with 140 Hybrids but that load was hard on brass, at least in my gun.

One story I read about 2217 was the guy reckoned he still got the velocity he wanted with it ( compared to 2209 ) but he got much better brass life. Just try it i reckon, might get you good enough velocity. Regards Rob Kerridge.

No mention of 2213SC? Of the ADI powders, this splits 2209 and 2217 in burn rate.

2213 or 2217 would be my pick. I run 2217 in my 260AI , 49.5 with a 140 gives me 2960 and pressure and brass life is excellent. Start about 54 of 2217 in 6.5x284 with 130 and work up

Alan you probably would have burnt more barrels than anyone in OZ with this cal and as you suggest 2213 would probably be the best choice but I keep stocks of 2209 and 2217 for other cals and id like to consolidate if possible.

ill dump some 2217 in and see how much I can get in with my current throat length and may try some ballpark loads against 2209 and see how they go for velocity and accuracy. The primer pocket saving of 17 is appealing but I'm guessing 09 will end up with an edge on accuracy and possibly velocity

Adam,

There was 6.5-284 used in South Australia in the very early days of this forum (around 2006) by a "bjld". From memory he used 2217 and the thing was still shooting well at about 3000 rounds. I don't think he was getting much velocity though.
