New Sierra 230gr SMK

#1 Postby AlexE » Wed Feb 28, 2018 5:46 pm

Has anyone seen these (or any of Sierra's other heavy high BC mm) in Australia yet?

If the numbers are to be believed, they offer a significant advantage over the Berger 230 hybrid with a g1 of 0.8 and should put a 300wsm well ahead of a Saum in terms of of drift, albeit at the cost of recoil.

I have 500 110smks on the way from Brownells Australia for a 6brx, but they aren't listing the 230 and everything from there is hellishly expensive. I'm keen to see what the Australian importer is bringing in and what the cost will be.

Cheerio,
Alex

when you say drift, do you mean deflection?
the twist required to stablize them will give them more drift than a shorter bullet with appropriate twist.
keep safe,
bruce.

Drift/deflection due to wind, Bruce. My apologies if there's a more appropriate term I should be using.

0.8 g1 BC at 2850 fps (as fast as I can go accurately with 230 Bergers) is surely something to be reckoned with?

I have a new unchambered 8 twist 308 barrel for sale here if you need it, i decided to go with a 9 twist for berger 230s.

https://www.sierrabullets.com/store/pro ... 30-gr-HPBT
This bullet requires a barrel twist rate of 1x8” or faster.
This bullet was introduced in January 2018.
Dia. (inches) Weight (grains) Sectional Density Ballistic Coefficients and Velocity Ranges
0.308 230 .376 .800 @1880 fps and above
.780 between 1600 and 1880 fps
.740 @ 1600 and below

27 inches is a little short for my liking thanks Macguru.

If I could find a length for the bullet I'd see how the 230 smk looks with a 9 twist at magnum speeds using the Miller stability calculator. I'm hoping they will be ok.

Yes thats why I bought the bartlein 31" 9 twist, for my project. I figure the one i am selling is more suited to a whisper or blackout build, but if no-one buys it i may use it in my "tactical" 308W with juggernauts, although they work fine in a 10 twist.

It surely is. I emailed Brownells and asked them to add the product to their website hoping that their pricing might be a little more competitive than other places (as an aside, anything that is on the Brownells US site that isn't on the Australian one can be added almost straight away by emailing then).

For that sort of dollars, I'll shoot something else.

In the states they're 34 USD per 50. Same product here approx 58 USD per 50.

I don't know who in the supply chain is making the money, but their business model is obviously a low volume one!

Yeah! I looked at Sierras last year. Not sure who's making the money but i was told they're distributed by OSA here.
I bought Nosler RDFs and a CCs instead.
