6x47 or 6mm 250AI?

#1 Postby Tim N » Sun Sep 03, 2017 7:26 pm

Hi All,
Maybe the question should be large or small primer?
I'm wanting to build a 6mm with a bit more umph than my dasher.
Does anyone have experience with a 6/250 AI?
Seems it should be a similar capacity to the 6x47 but with a big primer.

6x47 brass is great. I am still using my original 200 cases.

Would you consider 6 credmore as a viable option for big case , small primer and available dies and brass

John,
The 6 creedmoor is also a contender, just wanted to hear some opinions about primer size preference as this will be used mostly at the longs where ES - SD really matters.
I'd like to try the sierra 110s and maybe 115s
I see berger list a 1:7 twist for the 105 HYB but most are using 1:8?

6mm swiss match - great RWS brass and Julie and Cam Mcewen proved it to be an extremely accurate cartridge. There was some outstanding groups shot with their rifle.

I used to be indecisive, but now I'm not so sure :-k

Tim,
I have used my 6XC back to 1000 -once,.. was ok at 900yds but I wasn't happy with it at 1000. But, I did barrel tune it for the short ranges and it shoots very well out to 700yds. I reckon it could be load tuned to shoot the longs. I only used 115gn Dtacs, (made by Sierra). I have nipped up the chamber @ 1100 rounds and it shoots very well still. Mines 7.5T to suit the D-Tacs. Also tried 105's and 109's and they all shot very well. The lighter projectiles went pretty fast.

Hey Geoff
What velocities are you getting with the 115s?

Bruce - the slr might be a tad big for string shooting?
I understand it's all a compromise and there's nothing wrong with the 2 -284 barrels I could be using but I'm keen to try a 6mm exclusively for a while and might bravely (foolishly) attempt the SA queens with a 6mm ONLY
Anyone else game to try?

Tim,
With D-Tac 115gn @3000fps easy & the lighter pills a lot faster. The case is a tad longer than the 6x47 . My original plan was to use the 6mm for the shorts and 7mm for the longs, it worked quite well.

tim,
you make a good point re compromise.
part of the formula is shootability, a thing which was overlooked when i was previously visiting this forum.
it was all highest b.c. at highest velocity then.
now fclass shooters understand wind better, and do not seem to be asking a cartridge to magically do that for them.
barrel life is also in the formula if you are not rich.
i personally went from 6.5/284 to 284 chasing b.c., but could never shoot the 7mm as well as the 6.5, due to increased violence.
going back to the 6.5 super lr has been my compromise, as it is easy to shoot, has good barrl life, and is accurate.
shooting 1 cartridge allows an intimate knowledge of it.
come to the sara queens with a 6mm and if you do not win it will not be the fault of the cartridge.
either way you will have a good time.
in case capacity, the 6.5 super lr seems to be very close to the 6.5 creedmoor, so 6mm versions would be similar.
keep safe,
bruce.
