reloading on the road

#1 Postby saum2 » Wed May 10, 2017 7:39 pm

Just wondering what is the best gear to reload with while travelling.
I have a heavy press and Redding bushing dies, A&D scale etc for home.
Is it Arbor press with dies or????? what dies??? powder throwing ? I shoot .284W & 7SAUM
I'm thinking of some lighter gear while travelling as weight will be an issue.

The US BR guys seem to go for the RCBS Partner press for case prep & an arbor press for seating, but then again, a lot throw powder charges, so what they do doesn't necessarily translate.

I'm probably way off here but I think the reason short range BR can get away with throwing charges is that they don't need to worry about SD or maintaining it. I've spoken to a few BR guys at Belmont who have no idea what their velocities are don't care.
I stand to be corrected on this.

BR shooters (100&200) can throw charges and "get away with it" because the powders they are using have very small granules and can be thrown to a half tenth through a good thrower, with a good operator..

Ok Guys, I could handle a powder thrower with the A&D scales to make things more precise. It's the heavy press I don't need to lug around, so what dies are best with an Arbor press??

Get a Hood or Harrel press, they combine an Arbour press with a 7/8 die set up. And they are compact to boot.

Wilson dies are used with an arbor press, neck die and seater dies

Hi Geoff, I mainly use a Sinclair arbor press with Wilson dies, also have a Harrell press which is quite compact and takes normal dies.

Cheers

+ 1 for sinclair arbor press and Wilson dies. Very precise and repeatable results. They cater for an excellent range of calibers as well

My approach to reloading on the road is to have a van dedicated to shooting, and that is where all the reloading is done, whether its parked at home or away at a shoot. My presses are a Redding T7, and a Sinclair arbor with Wilson dies. Scales are Redding balance beam, which I find to be very tolerant of platform movement, and it doesn't need warming up. Obviously the van approach doesn't work for international shoots.

I second the Harrels press for sizing. It is relatively light and compact but also has its own clamp to secure it to tables, so no need to screw it down.

Of course I would still prefer Alan's travelling Reloading lab, but it would be hard to hide that from my wife.

I use one of the cheap Lee hand presses when away and in front of the tele at home when it's cold in the shed. I can do everything from decapping through to bullet seating but it does take a bit longer than with a normal press. Using the Lee collet dies and seating dies very good ammo can be made. Powder scoop and trickler are used to meter out powder onto what ever scale is convenient.
