10 Twist 308 Win barrel ok for 155.5gn projectiles?

#1 Postby sevenmil » Mon Nov 28, 2016 6:44 pm

Hi guys,
I realise that there are a few old threads on this topic, but just wondering if anyone is currently using 10 twist 308Win barrels using lighter 155.5gn Bergers?

I just bought a Benchmark 1:10 twist for my 2nd F-Standard rifle with a view of using the standard 155.5 Bergers, but down the track perhaps giving FTR a go using heavier projectiles.

The question I have have is, are 10 twist barrels still generally accurate with these lighter 155.5gn pills ? :?: :?: :?:

My best barrels with that weight pill have been 1/11.
Faster twist than what may have been recommended in the past.
We have seen good results with 155 Hybrids in 1/10 barrels also.
From my experience it is not a problem to "over spin " a pill rather than the opposite!
Except in extremes - for example I have been running 39 BK .204 cal at 3830fps in 1/8 twist!
Went extremely well until a 400 round mark and pills now occasionally coming apart about 15-20 yards from muzzle!
Once again - this is extreme situation not what you asked!
My take would be 1/10 fine!

10" twist barrels are fine for the crop of available 30 cal 155 grain bullets. I have fitted many of them for customers all have reported excellent results. I am myself running a 10" twist barrel in 30/06AI right now, it shoots all bullets up to 210 grain VLD into very small groups when I do my part.

:) Thanks guys, appreciate your feedback.
I understood that that a number of TR and FS shooters use 10 twist barrels and have won several prize meetings, so they must be ok.

Cheers

I ran a 1:11 5R Krieger with 155.5gr pills and had no problems at all. My 1:10 I'm using for F/TR shot my old standard 155 load into the same hole at 100 yards when I was fire forming, so don't think you'll have a problem.

I've yet to set up my 30/06AI Kieth. I've fire formed 50 cases, was hoping to work up loads with 210jlks or 215 hybrids. I put a 1:9 in mine because I heard the 1:10 is a bit marginal when you get over 210gr.

215 have stabilised in 1/10 at Belmont - effectively sea level in a .308!
32" barrel with stiff load but within Belmont limitations - ie <2710 fps.
30/06 Imp with extra velocity? Won't be a problem!

I shot them at the MR championship at Raglan this year in a 1/10. They got out to 1100 metres OK (nothing that couldn't be attributed to the salubrious conditions at that location) at something around 2650. Bear in mind that we still use the old 800m/900 yard target for MR.

At 1200 yards that's roughly the same degree of difficulty as the ICFRA target at 1000. Can't remember the exact figures.
