information on 7x47 lapua

Hi all thinking of building a 7mm on a 308 bolt face. I'm hopping some body can fill me in on the 7x47 lapua or any other good 7mm round to run thanks.

Mate,

Dont waste you time with a 7x47.....dies would most likely be a pain to get and you wont see the full benefit of the high bc 7mm bullets.

I'd suggest a straight 284w, easy to get dies, brass is avaikble and is currently the most used cartridge in FOPEN.

If you are thinking about something a little lighter than the 284W, then a 7-08 in a 1:9 twist barrel would be a good solution.

You can simply neck size 308 brass down to 7mm, and 308 brass is certainly cheaper than the 6.5x47L or 284W brass at the moment!

I'd probably go with Palma Brass as it will allow you to run at slightly higher pressures. You would then run the 168 Bergers which are extremely accurate.

It will get the 180s to 3000f/s if needed and my new RWS brass is doing it fine.
You don't have to run it that fast but the option is there.
Plumbs7 has enjoyed the 7/08 but now is using a straight 284.
Just depends if you want the best chance to compete at the longs

for 7mm if you want to use 180gr target bullets for their BC. of course just my opinion I have only tried 3 of these in the sweet spot category.

too small: 7x47, 7mm08
sweet spot: 284, 284shehane, 280, 280AI , 7mmSAUM
bit big but ok: 7mm WSM
too big: 7mm rem mag, rem full length ultra mags etc.

Yep .284 is awesome ! Need it for 1000 yds that is for sure !

But the 7-08 Ai up to 800 yds for a prize meet cal with 180 hybreds at 2720 fps is an absolute tack driver . Top prize meet cal ! Doesn't make sense but works ! Was good to see the lil cartridge find its legs on the weekend! But I screwed the .284 back in pretty quickly for the next serious longs!

7X47 will beat the 7-08 with light pills but not with 180's. I own a 7X47 reamer and dies are an easy modification to standard 6.5X47 dies, just open the neck and use .318 bushings with Lapua brass.

I'm getting 2900+ with 140gr VLD's from a 24" barrel with 40gr of 2208 and am about to build a 500m fly heavy gun with an 8" twist barrel at 28" to shoot 168's. Should be able to beat a 6.5X47 shooting 130's for wind going by my math and data from others I've collected.

I already have a .284 so I don't need to shoot 180's from the 7X47 besides 180's are a bit much in a light gun, fine in an F open gun though and I'm only shooting it to 500m

Pity the WSSM brass has such a bad rep or they would neck-up nicely to a compact 7mm on a short action almost.
