.223 F Class

#16 Postby littlebang556 » Wed Dec 13, 2006 3:31 pm

Let it be known that I have no experience with 9 twist barrels, only 10T and 7.7T but from what I have read you could be fighting an up hill battle when exposed to the longer ranges.
I know Alan F has experience with .223 F Class with 69 grainers, might be worth asking him.
Otherwise I had reasonable success with 26g 2206 when I used 69's out of a worn out barrel.
80's in a 7.7T (25.4 of 2208/15 thou jump/Rem 7.5) let me score a 100.20 in fullbore comp with several 100's (high V count) in close succession.
My sugestion would be keep 9T for short range and get another for long range or get another barrel...either way it will cost you a few $...or just enjoy your shooting and carry on with what you have.

Regards

Robert A

Yes i have reduced my loads to 24 grains and tested them today. much greater success and should have a bit more case life. case life is not a problem for myself as i have an unimited supply of brass. thanks to the police shooting their mini 14s at our range. my only concerns are my self and other people and lastly my rifle. it should be well know tho that 24.3 of 2206 has been used for many years in the fullbore circle. other shooters that use a 223 all know that to get the 80 grain pill to perform to 900m it needs a good kick up the backside.

by the way, we have tried our 223s at 1100m and they are still supersonic and shooting ok

One 1 in 9 inch twist barrel I tried with 80 grain Sierras did not stabilize them.

I do not believe any 223 using 80 grain MK projectiles will ever be supersonic at 1100 metres. The sound they make may not be a good indicator.

BUT this does not mean they wont shoot reasonably well. The quest for supposedly supersonic bullets at 1000y - as judged by ear - has lead some to overload.

It is not necessarily sensible to simply add more powder just because someone says they dont sound right. Try for velocity measurements.

And accuracy usually suffers anyway apart from the more obvious issues.

my quest was not to have a round that is supersonic at 1100m. it was just coincidental that it is and my load is hot.

QUESTION ON MY 223 LOAD FOR F CLASS

#20 Postby SAVAGEV » Thu Dec 14, 2006 12:10 pm

HELLO PEST BIRD :D , MY SAVAGE HAS A TWO PEICE BASE AND I HAVE SHIMMED THE BACK BASE PEICE WITH TWO THIN BRASS STRIPS. MY SCOPE IS ZERO AT 300 YARDS AND THIS GIVES ME ROUND ABOUT 275 CLICKS FROM ZERO. AND YES MY 24.1 GRAINS OF AR2206 LOAD DOES SHOOT WELL.WITH OUT BOASTING 8) I HAVE PUT SOME VERY EXPENSIVE 308'S TO SHAME  .MY BEST SCORE 118 OUT OF 126 TOTAL WITH THIS LOAD AT 500 YARDS. I HAVE SHOT THE 600 AND 700 YARDS WITH SOME GOOD RESULTS. LAST YEAR (2005 ) I TOOK OUT THE BEST SCOPE SHOOTER TROPHY FOR THAT YEAR AT MY LOCAL RANGE. BUT THIS YEAR I ONLY SHOT HALF OF THIS YEAR BECAUSE OF ILLNESS. THANK YOU TO VERY ONE FOR ANSWERING MY QUESTION AND HOPE TO HEAR MORE FROM YOU SOON.

By shimming the back base as you have done you are putting strain on the scope barrel as you are trying to bend it when you tighten the rings.
This can be alieviated by lapping or reaming the rings. Or you can have a competitant machinist make you a pair of tapered shims that give the required taper without stressing the scope.
:(
Or better still get yourself a set of Burris Signature Zee rings complete with offset inserts kit . By putting a -10 in the front ring and a +10 in the rear ring you can get the required taper and as the inserts are self aligning they do not put stress on the scope.

If you have trouble getting the Burris rings try the Sinclair International web site and bend the credit card a little, its worth it. :D :D
