New kid

#1 Postby headspace » Thu Apr 21, 2016 8:30 pm

I've been a shooter most of my adult life and in the beginning there was a heavy barrelled 303 out at the ANZAC Range at Liverpool. I moved on to hunting and then benchrest and a whole lot of things, but later I decided it was time to get back to the paper hunting. After a lot of thought I decided on a 6.5 Creedmoor. I like building things so bought a Howa heavy barrel and action and ordered a walnut thumbhole stock from Cameron Hatcher. I fitted a 6.5-20x50 Vortex Viper with a 20MOA rail and Warne rings. Ammo is a problem but I got 100 rounds of factory and have begun loading the fired cases. My local range is at Casino in Northern NSW where I've been shooting mostly hunting rifles. A 600yard range is there and run by the Casino Rifle Club. I have stocks of 2209 and 2208 powder, and 123gn Nosler Custom Comps as well as a few hundred 140gn Amax. This rifle is not the most expensive one but it shoots, and that's important.
So how am I doing so far?

Mate that's fine , I know Casino as we holiday down there and always drop in and say hi to Chris at the Gun shop there! Above is my first Opm ( wild dog talked me into going which was good !), the Nationals in b grade , I didn't even know how to score ! Sorry to those who were there and I scored for u . G loch , poor bloke! Had only gone to 3 club meets at Cannonhill rc before I went to the nats ! That's black Betty with the 20" above ! My first ever 300 yds was at that comp which was a 57.3 ( which was a pb for some years at that range )
Had been at my local Ssaa for 5 years and turned into a black sheep when I wanted to break static clays at 900 yds . Nearly got kicked out of the club !

My first Rifle was a rifle that I bought for my 18 th birthday present . Was a cmc mountaineer or aka a howa . I hunted with it for a while then in 2006 I turned it into a target rifle which looks very simsilar to urs ! Many rounds at 100m followed , so many that I cut a 4" sucker in half that was in between the backstop and target ! Everyone thought I was nuts! Spending every minute on the net learning the theory behind long range ballistics !
I was just very, very driven! And saw it through ! If there's one bit of advice for a newguy ! Don't give up ! Be very determined to see this sport through. There's a lot to get ur head around and see like an apprenticeship ( which I am still indentured!)

Good luck ! Graham Sells Dalby Tara Rc

Nice looking timber stock there head space ,next time I am shooting at casino I will look out for it or you. Try some Berger's 130 VLDs you should get about 3000 fps out of them most 6.5 like them depending on the chambering.

Thanks for your responses gentlemen, I'm looking forward to some interesting times trying get my head around moa scope adjustments, ballistics and all the rest. But I'm up for a challenge. When I wear the barrel out on the Howa I'll probably go for a Maddco, just like to support the locals. I went up to the range at Belmont today, that's big turnout for a country boy! I think I'll stick with Casino.
I thought about the Bergers but I want to see how the 300 140gn Amax will shoot, plus the 200 123gn Custom Comps I have. That target I posted was using Hornady factory 120's. The Custom comps shoot a lot better, and the Amax are still in development. Here's a shot of a reasonable 123gn target. I usually patronise the Barker boys over at Pro Hunt.
Cheers,
John
