7mm SAUM loads

#1 Postby Tim N » Tue Jan 19, 2016 12:56 pm

Hi All,
I will hopefully have my new 7mm saum soon(no pressure Matt :) )
So if you saum shooters wouldn't mind sharing pet loads, that would be appreciated!
I have a stash of 180 VLDs and 168 VLDs

Tim, both my saum barrels like 55.8gr of 2209, 180vld & CCI BR2. The 30" barrel is 2950 fps and the 26" barrel is 2900 fps. cases seem to holding up very well without any pressure signs.

Hey Geoff
I have the dreaded 2209 and some 2213
Even some RL 15/22
I am also willing to try whatever works which in your case is 2217?
Just interested in getting info on what people are using.

stick to 2213sc, unlike in other cases it burns incredibly cleanly and its easier on the cases in a saum. i am happy around 2900fps but you can go higher if barrel life is not a factor. i use just under 59gr in my setup. I have another saum in the pipeline but i know i am behind you in the same queue :)

I have a saum and a spare 280AI on the way so I'm afraid you will be waiting twice as long

Does anyone use magnum primers in their saum?

BR2's , i have not tried much else or feel the need, the savage/8.5 krieger is still working fine but i am looking forward to trying the barnard in saum configuration. Its a bit like comparing a porsche and a veedub :) .....

Hi Tim, I'm a fan of 2209 but have a fair bit of 2217 to use and have found a load @ 63gns with an SD of 2 over 6 shots. Ok, I realize one needs a lot more rounds for a true indication of a good load but it shoots quite well on paper @ 2950fps and easy on brass. I used Mag primers originally and it shot ok but I got better SD with BR2's I believe the magnum primer are better with slow burning powder. So with 09 I'd use BR2's

Thanks for the info so far....
Just an aside,
I've noticed there is a couple of schools of thought when it comes to picking a cartridge to do a certain job, namely to drive a 180 gn 7mm @ 2850-2950.
Some like to squeeze it out of the smallest case possible 7mm08 AI etc run on the ragged edge or go with the bigger cartridges 7 saum etc and do it easy, much like the turbo 4cyl vs 350 chev.
I was in the first group, who think you can somehow beat the system, but now am leaning toward the second which is possibly more efficient in the end with cases lasting longer and less stress on the action etc.
Anyhow the endless choices available make it interesting!

I have been using 2209 in my recent barrel and found both BR2 and FED primers produced very good ES (around 10 FPS). I have also just started trying some 2217 and so far it looks promising. I started with BR2 but found it to burn cleaner and have lower ES with CCI250 MAG primers. I only gained 10 FPS with the CCI 250 over the BR2 but ES was a little better so it looks like they are quite light for a MAG primer. The FED 215 MAG primer gave an extra 70 FPS so they are a hotter primer. I will need to put some more rounds down but 2217 appears to be a little easier on the barrel as compared to 2209.
I am using a Short SAUM which is 120 thou shorter which is why my loads below are a little less than a normal SAUM but the powder/primer combo is still relative..

50.5 GNS 2209 180 hybrid 2831-2840 BR2
51.4 GNS 2209 180 hybrid 2895-2905 FED
58 GNS 2217 180 hybrid 2842-2853 CCI 250
59.4 GNS 2217 180 hybrid 2902-2912 CCI 250

Brad,
I still have the short saum, just haven't put the time into it.
I want to try 168s when I get around to it.
