RL 17...anyone?

#1 Postby Tim N » Wed Nov 04, 2015 7:34 am

Hi All,
I am currently experimenting with a short saum, hoping to get 2850 with 180s comfortably
Using 2209- 2850f/s is starting to show signs of pressure.
I have some RL17 which according to one website does great things.
Has anyone used RL17 in a 284 etc with good results over a longer period ie summer/winter

Tim,
Try 2217, you won't get any pressure signs until around 3100. (depending on FB) I did read that RL17 was temp unstable?

Tim,
I am getting 2850 fps comfortably with my 284 Win using 2209, and that is after going up almost a grain following the re-throat that I got Matt to do .

I used RL17 in my first 284 barrel , and found it to be extremely temp unstable.
I gained 104fps when the temp went up about 6 degrees C.
It certainly gave high velocity easily but I figured that I couldn't afford that sort of variation, so put it back in the cupboard :D
Extreme accuracy and precision shooting at long range can be a very addictive pastime.

Tim , I have used a LOT of Reloader powder and I found R17 to be the worst for Temperature stability!! You can get unbelievable velocity but I have never found it to be a great Target Powder.

R19 is probably the Best with regards to Temp stability and resistance to humidity. I also found it to be very kind on throat wear when pushed at moderate velocity. Burn rate is between 2209-2213. Because it is double based i have found if you run reloader too light it will gum up or carbon foul and looks very black in the barrel . Once you get up to pressure it turns a lighter grey coulour and burns very clean and stable. If you are going to run Reloader the R19 would be my choice over R17 for your Short Saum..

Have you measured your case capacity in water grains on your Short Saum??

My Short WSM measures 64 gns of water total capacity with a spent primer in it.
51.3 gn 2209 gives me 2895 and 56 gns N165 gave me 2880 both with 180 VLD
Hope that helps..

Hi Brett,
I'll check the case capacity after the weekend
Thanks all for the info on RL17
It can stay in the cupboard

RL17 is quite commonly used over here in the UK with the .284 W. It is quite capable of getting velocitiesof well over 2900 fps with ease and I have shot against several F open rifles using it and can certainly vouch for their accuracy, in fact the GB National champion used it last weekend to win that title. I used it several years ago to fire form .284W brass to 7mm Shehane and possibly had one of the most accurate fire forming loads that I have come across.

What you have to remember is we have a very temperate climate and temperature swings are generally small. Personally I don't use it as I prefer H4350 and H4831Sc.

Elwood,

While we have your attention, are you aware of any recent supply problems with Vihta Vuori in the UK? The current Australian agent has stopped importing it, apparently because of supply and price issues. Its also expensive in the US.

Alan , Viht is still available but NIOA have decided that due to the problematic shipping from Europe to Australia it is not viable to place an order . They said it would raise the price to a level where they believed they would not be able to sell it so have chosen NOT to order anymore!!!

Brett,

Yes I heard that too. I guess that leaves the door open for another agent, hopefully with less excuses and more capability. After all, at least some of the Alliant powders are manufactured in Scandinavian countries and they are available and affordable here.

I think you'll find that in this case the issue might not be the importer. There's been suggestions of a change to the Viht ownership/business plan & it appears to no longer be readily available. http://bulletin.accurateshooter.com/201 ... -continue/

John,

That is from 2012. Nammo took over from Eurenco in early 2014. http://www.vihtavuori.com/en/news/1 . Have you read something more recent than this?

Alan, a few of the Vhit powders were hard to get hold of six or so months back, mainly N160, but supply is back to normal in the UK.

Once the "mark of the beast" takes over an import item it seems prices goes up (way up) then importation stops. Really dodgy business practices too. I'm sure you know who I'm talking about. Some of us have long memories.
