( we're in a hurry to pack up!) but had a run of x's and 6's with somebody from Northarm coaching ! Quite happy ! About 1/2 min diff between a Saum and the 08ai . But I was the only one with an 08 Ai , all on my lonesome ! Lol!

That probably would have been Andrew coaching.

Yep!

Are you using a standard 40 degree shoulder?
How much have you pushed the shoulder forward?

Is 2209 performing better than 2213sc? Most folks here are using H4831sc (2231sc) in their .284's.
I far as I know, everyone here is using the 284 win or 7rsum for 1000 yards. It looks like the 7-08 on steroids is a better option.

Hi , nope , just a standard 40 deg shoulder that Pesco had .
Footsore ( Steve ) was using 2213 sc but only because that's all he could use to get it to work , I hear he has rechambered and crowned that barrel and is going to give it another go. 2209 is perfect for this caliber as 2213sc is too slow I feel to make the most of the efficiency that this case generates .

1000 yds : a Group of Se qld shooters have been coming together as good mates and doing some 1000 yd training at Belmont for fun . So in that group we have Saums , sheehanes and 284's and then there's me ! Lol! Nigel no mates #-o . Between the 284 and the 08 Ai they are nearly the same or very close . Saum like I said is about 1/2 to 3/4 Moa in drift . But nothing will save u from bad wind reading or a quick drop off or velocity change !
My opinion and its early days with just 1 session of 1000 yds under my belt . But with a highly tuned gun and a master wind reader behind the butt , the lil 7-08ai can mix it with its big brothers and From 300 yds out to the ton! Time will tell but after the weekend I'm feeling a little better with my gamble !

Hello all,
I plan to order a 7mm barrel and reamer in the next couple of weeks.
I could use some help with specs.
I would like to use the 7-08AI, am I chasing a dream or can it compete with a straight .284?
Would you use a "normal" 7-08 AI or push the shoulder further forward? How much?
30" or 32" barrel? I plan to shoot the 180 Berger's or SMKs, your thoughts?

Hey CW
I haven't read all of this thread but it seems you may not have dies for this project yet and if that's the case you could pick any 7 mm cartridge with a 308 head, so if you want 284 performance why not build one?
I have 4x 7mm s that I use and have favoured the 280 AI of late with a 7 saum also showing promise.
To me you would be better of getting the desired result from a cartridge that will do it easy without over stressing the brass and your action.
After all whatever you build will go bang and send a 180gn at around 2900 to get the best result, just depends if you want to do it easy.

My Son hasn't shot since November . If that group was centred he would have done very well! Very choppy on the weekend !

Interesting ratios, Graham. What was the wind doing between shoots? Direction/strength. Any mirage running?

Remember some of Andrew's groups. Group patterns at different ranges are similar. Whether you are at the start, middle or end of trajectory will be a factor in the spread and slope as is gyroscopic stability and Magnus force in lift and yaw as well as light and air density which combines as mirage. It is important to keep plots. Too many shooters go rat tat tat, have no time to plot and learn for the next big occasion.

The caliber is capable as Quick as shown and the above demonstrates . But the above also shows what happened at Blemont if u got it wrong ! Not only windage but elevation ! Like all things it's the person pulling the trigger too! Just a reminder that 3!of the Raton group had their rounds cruising in at 2830 fps and were highly tuned . I think that's the key to the whole thing!

Whether u want a ragged on the limit 7-08ai or do it easy Saum !
My cases are holding up very well and show no sign of failer . Have only had to throw one case away due to the primer not holding anymore . The cases get better with age and annealing . This has been a good blog . One can see the whole developement of the case ! Inside I had severe doubts about how it would hold up at 1000 yds . But it can do what a .284 can do!

David , I totally agree and this is where dampeners and tuners come in . Cam had his rifles that finely tuned that they could (7mm) shoot from 300 to 1000 yds ! He was not only a master pilot but tuner and gunsmith in his own right.

In my own mind over the past few weeks of training , I've proven to myself that dampeners and rubbers work. I couldn't get 180 vld's to shoot for love nor money in this gun and we all saw the 175 group at 400 yds ! Well with the dampener and a little tweeking it has showed great waterline at any range . So far and also my bad wind skills! The above is the first time with 175 smk's out of the box.

Also remember that there was some serious up and down drafts too! I had up too half a minute of extra elevation at times . And when it wasn't there u got punished ! People were complaining about that at the last Qld queens !

Sorry David , catching up on ur posts ! As I said before it was all over the place ! I was in lane 11 with a left breeze . So we were in the worst side . As the wind swirls over the trees and who knows what it's doing!!?? I remember on 1 shot that my Son shot the flags all looked the same as the previous 6 ring shot but it came up in the 4 nearly 5 ring. We all looked around a eachother saying what the ? Then a few seconds later and big wind shier gust into our faces . Flags didn't show it! Have a look at the hex web site and have a look at some of the trends . The best spot I believe would have been on the other side of the range when the wind sorted itself out! But I learnt heaps !
