I fire-formed my first batch of 7-08ai cases from Lapua 7-08 brass (one firing so far), as mentioned in my earlier post the Lapua .308 Win Palma SR brass has coal of 2,015" and even after 8 firing the cases were still only 2.015" long (due mainly to the ai having a 40 degree shoulder angle).

The 7.08 has a trimmed length of 2.035" as cases are 2.045", I have attached a photo of the old (Win Palma on the left) & new ( Lapua 7-08 on the right) cases and you can see the case length difference, this should solve the problem of bullet expanding in the void in front of the neck case throat area, as per image above.

Because the Lapua 7-08 cases have large primer pockets I had to reduced the load by .5 of a grain and all seems ok.

You don't know how close this cal was nearly cut up and chambered in .284 ? Thanks to Mark F and finding me a barrel out of his stash and chamb in .284 to do dev squad with , otherwise it was going to be toast and we would never have seen how great this lil cal is !! Today after pulling the .280 Ai barrel. I quickly screwed in the lil 7/08 Ai , clean bore for 11 shot detail. 820 yds at my home range of Dalby! First shot 3 , 2 nd shot 6 . Then wacked out a 65.9 !! Edit !! 28.8.17

I can't read score cards . Was 65.5 . Still very happy !
At the Nationals I shot this in the lead up on the first day . Won 300 yds with a 60.8 and came 4 th for the day dropping 2 .
It's taken a while but have finally got it sorted .
Low recoil compared to a 280 Ai or saum . Can hold its own out to 800 yds , great barrel life and case life with .308 brass cheaper than other cals !
Great cal to consider if your a tr or f standard shooter .
Maybe a faster twist say a 8.5 or faster maybe even able to keep it out of the dead speed zone and make it able to shoot 1000 yds !

I do have go pro footage of the detail today and I'll post if people want it later on in the week !
But how close was this cal came to being thrown out !

Ps it's a bit of work to get go pro video up on utube . If you want to see it , please hit the like button above , so I know that it's worth while ?

Very mild recoil by the looks !

And much the same wind drift as say a 6.5x284. With a lot better barrel life !!

What's not to like ?

Ya gonna bring it to Trentham ?

Hi Rob , I'll most likely be bring it to NZ and shoot it in the lead up and Queens .but a lot of water to pass under the bridge yet !!

In regards to wind drift it will keep up with a saum up to 800 yds with a good pilot behind it .
Just want to give a plug for Pseco who built the gun and chambered the 7-08 Ai .

I really love this cal ! After nearly 1800 rounds, the lands no longer mark the projectile. And to maintain 2730 FPS with 180’s I am now at 47.1 gr of 2209 . But damn it shoots !!
After a forced family break ( eg family sanctioned ) from shooting I came back screwed out the 280 ai barrel . Found the little Bartlien barrel 7-08 ai somewhere deep in the dungeon. Dusted her off and screwed it back into my stolle and used the same load as NZ earlier in Feb . I hadn’t touch my gun except for a fly shoot with the 280 ai and f class club shoot back in July I think . But nothing in a major or opm on Aussie soil since Vic Pol 2017 opm .

No fowling shots or checked before shooting just turned up and shot a 60.7 at 300m NT Arm opm and counted out fellow Qld shooter LT. I honestly thought I was heading for a 52 or worse . And after honestly thinking I had totally lost support of my family ( whom had supported me for 11 yrs of comp shooting and they needed a break ) . I thought I wouldn’t be back till 2021. Also was trying 180 ELD’s with no testing at all!!

Well a lot of emotions came out after such a long break with no certainty of my return and a huge yeeeelllp, and a few minor fist pumps came out lol! It was good to be back !! I’m sorry for the few who wondered what the “Heck “ was going on . And rightly so a few complaints were made , but they didn’t know the story behind that 60.7and the lil 7-08 ai , now a pensioner barrel that just so easily achieved it !! Also won the next range a PB at 400yds and another 60.5 or 6 at 500 the next day for a 3 rd !!
I’ll be very sad when she finally dies !! After shooting it I’ll Class the 7-08 ai as a 6.5 on steroids that can shoot competitively shoot from 300 to 900 yds . In fact my only possible NZ at the longs was at 900 yds on the Thursday practice with the 7-08 , before changing back to 284 win ( conditions were a little kinder too then ) .

The barrel consistently produces sub SD 5 FPS ( it never use to do this and has gotten better with age) and taken straight of a charge master!! I still weigh primers!!
Again it will be a sad day when it dies !! It will go to the pool room lol!!
I’m going to call it , it has been a wonderful experience going through the development of this cal . As a club opm cal you cannot go wrong . I am retracting my statement about 1-8.5 twist and now would say stick with 9 twist !! ELD’s work very well !!
But I’ll end it by saying the lil caliber that could !!

The End !!
Ps , there are some u tube vids of when I was doing that sort of thing at Dalby rc 800 yds , if one wants to see it in action !

Hi All,
Not sure if this is the right place for this question as I'm new to this forum stuff.

What seating dies is every one using for their 7mm-08AI?

I'm getting the rifle rebarreled chambered in 7-08AI, I have the standard 7-08 die set and a 7-08AI FL Die.
Is it OK to use the standard 7-08 seating die or do I need the AI seating die?

Thank you.

A Lee Dead Length Seater Die in 7mm08 will work. Otherwise, need a custom die I think. Redding do make them but is a special order I think.

If you can get a Forster the seating chamber is soft and you can just run your own reamer in to convert, alternatively if you have a Forster
7mm anything,
it’s no trick to make a new chamber completely they’re very simple, not sure if Redding’s are hardened never done one

Hornady 7mm/08 seater will work without alteration, or buy a Wilson 7mm blank and have your gunsmith chamber it with the reamer that he used to cut the chamber in your barrel. Also as Quick said the lee seater works well, I use a 280 Rem to seat bullets for club ammo for my 280HI

Great to see someone else , having a crack with this little cal ! It punches well above its weight . My 7-08 ai is still kicking butt . Must have over 2 k rounds through the Bart . But club shoot back in Feb at Dalby at 300 yds ( last time I shot ) i shot 123.12 edging out my Club mate Julie Mac on centre’s 123.4or 5 from memory in very switching conditions!
Lovely to shoot , very economical and out to 800 yds will hold its own even to Saums and 280 Ackleys
Just cruising a 180 vld’s at 2730 FPS out of a 30” barrel . Great cal for machine gunning through conditions! ( oops did I just say that lol! )
An excellent club and opm cal and a great tool to have in your tool box !

Ok been a while since I’ve been shooting and without looking in the shed , from memory.
I use a lee 7/08 normal seater and a Redding type S Ackley die . Want 2-3 thou neck tension and have very low sd’s Over 10 rounds of 2-3 FPS .

Good luck , regards Graham!
