6mm br velocities

#1 Postby mitchellchandler_au » Thu Sep 28, 2006 9:44 am

Could you guys tell me what sort of velocities i need to be able to achive to shoot at 600 yards with my 6mm br. Iam using 28.5 of 2208 in a 28inch barrel with the 107 smk. the groups seem to be running around the .170-.200 mark at the moment at 100 metres. Today I hope to get at 300 yards and test them.

Thanks,
Firepower usally means an increased number of misses per minute. 50 misses are not firepower. One hit is firepower

I'm running the same load and reach a velocity of 2,850fps.

It makes it to 1,000y with no problems.

Hi pest bird, I run 2 bbls in 6mmBR one at 30.5 gn 2208 for 2870 (30") and 29.7gn 2208 for 2830.(27") this one also can chew 31 gn VVn150 for about the same. Years ago when this site had some knowing contributers one such, Tony Z , astolled the virtues of 33gn 2209, I have not got arround to trying that. One of my club members runs 28.5 2206H and is happy. Good luck and let us know how you go as theres little happening on this site these days.

I run Lapua 105's on 2208 but use more than 28.5 of powder (no moly).
At the moment am using 31.5 from a barrel cut back to 26 inch with speed of about 2880.

I am not a 6BR Guru - it is not my primary rifle and I have not really tuned the load on this rifle. Never the time but I do want to do it soon. My tests show I would be willing to run 32.5 grains of 2208 if necessary but would rather not. Before the barrel was shortened I was running 1 grain less but you are running a different pill.

Without a reduced firing pin and thicker primers I could never get full speeds from a 6BR.

Group size on the target is more important than speed and if you can achieve 0.2 mins at 300y I probably would not be changing.

Peter Smith.

HI CHRIS

I started F Class early last year and am enjoying it .
I started with a Tikka Master Sporter , 6.5x55 but had trouble with my rigth eye and I now use a Rem 700 switch barrel in 6mmBR and 30X284.
I still shoot right handed but I had a 45mm high 20deg tapered base made up by Geoff Grenfell in Victoria, he has also done a great job fitting the barrels and his own barrel tuners to both barrels.
As for loads I will try a hotter load in the 6mmBR as there is no presure signs with my load. I had Geoff bush the firing pin hole as well which helps .
The 30x284 is a beast , I use 190gn Siera MK's doing 2980fps and it groups really well at 300m. I nearly shot my first possible a few months ago at 700yards but the Sako extractor broke after my 3 sighters. I used a cleanig rod to extract the cases which took for ever and the conditions changed, the rest is history.
I am waiting for Sierra to bring out there 30cal, 210gn MK's. They have a very high BC and should be outstanding in switchy conditions.
I got the idea of the high scope mount from the 6BR web site, I could have used it on my Tikka but I had already started the Rem project.
I have a Tikka Tactical in 223, it has a 20inch 1:8 twist factory barrel and I have used it at all F Class ranges with great sucess using 80gn Sierra MK's.
Cheers
