You have a fast barrel Andrew, the same charge in a smaller capacity 260 improved case is giving 2870!

What barrel life would one expect with the 6.5 CM using necked down Palma brass and running at 2950fps?
Also what's the availability of 140gn projectiles?

Hi Geoff

I ran a 6.5 CM for a fair bit before throat erosion on a Maddco starting throwing rounds.

Towards the end of its life I necked down Palma brass successfully. You need to turned the necks as the brass around the neck was far too thick. In all quite a simple process with the right gear.

In terms of speed I ran a 26 inch barrel and was getting just over 2800 fps running 41.6 gr of 2209 with 140 gr NCC. I understand the there are ample Berger 140 available. Did some light work with Hybrids but was too late in the barrel life.

I will be getting another 6.5 barrel sorted on another action to use. They are a great round. One of guys at our club recently rechambered a 6.5x284 Savage into a 6.5 CM and he is cracking it really well.

Cheers

Andrew

The actions are made by Defiance Machine to Short Actions Customs specs./modifications.

Barrel length if I'm not mistaken is 23" finish (not including the Surefire brake/suppressor attachment). I think they made they're barrels with a 1-8 twist but even a 1-8.5 twist is fine up to 140gr. type bullets. You can push 140's around the 2800fps. mark velocity wise.

I say the 6.5 Creedmoor and .260 Rem. are velocities/case capacity equals. I'm running 140's at 2730 average with H4350 powder. A buddy of mine is using H4831 and his are going 2840fps. They will have slightly more muscle than a 6.5x47 Lapua.

I don't have a 6.5 Creedmoor but I built a 6mm Creedmoor earlier last year. It's on a Badger M2008 action. Still has to get Cerakoted. Finish length on the barrel is 23". 105gr. bullets are averaging 2997fps. with a everyday working load.

Just a small update on the 6.5 Creedmoors. The finish length on the barrels is 22.5" (not including the Surefire brake) and they are 1-8 twist. Jeff says shooting the box Hornady 140gr. AMAX ammo his rifle was printing .250 to .3moa groups at a 100 yards. The 120's or the 129gr. bullets (not sure which) in the box ammo was sub .5moa. Once he gets some of the box ammo shot up he will just be handloading for it and believe he will be using the 142 SMK's.

••••••••••••••••••••••

actually i retested yesterday and they are going 2910 with low spread so i am happy with that
although i am tempted to try a warmer load again
I am not sure why the change , i am using the same magnetospeed ??

thats with 43.5gr 2209
fireforming with 42gr yields 2800fps with good accuracy

Stiller Tac30AW 6.5 Creedmoor

Hornady 140gr HPBT Match
Hornady Case
AR2209
Fed GM210 Primer
OAL 2.800"

41gr - 2693 2724
41.5gr - 2751 2754
42gr - 2782 2824
42.5gr - 2829 2831
43gr - 2834 2871
43.5gr - 2896 2870
44gr - 2935 2930

The primers look fine to me. According to quickload the max is just over 45gr but then it didn't predict that much velocity so i will have to have a play with it after i do some weighing of brass. The rifle has only fired the above 14 rounds so i will put some more through it and do a ladder test to see if the 2 loads with Low ES are good nodes.
