Moly loads

#1 Postby flatlina » Mon Apr 30, 2012 9:40 pm

I've been running 46 gns 2206H in my .308 with a 155 HBC. I'm thinking of giving some moly ones a try and was wondering how much more powder is needed to achieve similar FPS. The rifle is a Savage 10FP with a 24" barrel. The first loads I tried was with some of the original 2206H I bought when it first came out, this gave me an average of 3022 FPS. I chroned some loads with a new batch of powder and the average was 2932 FPS. I loaded up some moly pills and their avaerage was 2891 FPS.

I dont run moly but may try it when I have my dedicated FS rifle built.

From what I understand, it lesses the friction in the barrel, you have to use more powder to get same velocities as non-moly but you can use a higher max load to get even more velocity then say a load thats max in your barrel thats a non-moly load. But you use much more powder to get it.

Id try 2208 before you switch to moly. I run a 26" barrel with 46.2gr 2208 and get 2950fps from it. You could very well get better velocities with 2208 then 2206H. Its worth a shot at any rate I think.

I've tried 2208 and I get better velocities and accuracy with the 2206H. The original 2206H powder was very old and I think the new stuff doesn't give the same velocities. I realise you need more powder but was wondering if anyone had been thru the same . I do still have a fair amount of 2206 left tho.

John, Id try some Moly then. But as long as you get 2950 to 2970fps, you will be fine for 1000yds.

Let us know your results mate :)

John - what you have seen is absolutely normal. Batches of powder can easily be 50+ fps different (sometimes more). Moly normally requires a bit more charge for same velocity - but also don't rely 100% on chrono. They can be finicky beasts. Work up your load to the accuracy node again.

My experience with Moly ( years ago ) was a loss of about 30 f/s.
46 gn of 2206H is Recommended maximum and depending upon your Speed/load curve shape you would probably need about 4/10 to regain that 30 f/s. However in a 24" barrel I rather doubt that you will see any benefit. Much better with a 28" minimum barrel and lighter loads ( 45 gn or less )
