Using a throating reamer

#1 Postby Norm » Mon Apr 16, 2012 11:04 pm

I have ordered a throating reamer to deepen the throat on a 6mmBR chamber.
Anyone done this themself? I see that they can come with a T handle to hand cut the throat.
Has anyone had a go at doing this sort of thing themself?

Go really SLOW, and CAREFULLY, it takes no effort at all to remove 50 thou.

I can vouch for the fact they cut very quickly if your not careful. I wish I learned from the 1st time I tried it. Now I will use a series of 1/4" washers over the throater to act as stops to limit how far I can put the reamer in.

Rod forgot to mention that the most critical part in cutting a longer throat is do it BEFORE drinking the bottle of red. !!!!!

Yes, Matt, I had a moment there. I saw in a Gunsmithing article about lubricating the throat before machining and they had a bottle of red liquid. I didn't realize it was red Machining fluid and thought it was my usual throat lubricant, a Cab Sav. #-o
