Neilson rifles

#1 Postby sixmill » Sat Sep 05, 2009 11:32 am

G,day,
I need some info on a Neilson 600 rifle, i understand they are Australian built, When & where were they built? how do they rate? compared to other actions. Also what value range do they sell for?
I have spotted a 308 range rifle with laminated stock & maddco barrel suitable for converting to F-class, however i can't find any info about them.
Cheers sxml

I had a brand new MN600 back in 1992. It came with a Mastin stock, and was a great rifle.

It is a big improvement over an Omark, and a very good action. I had a Davies trigger on it, and it was reliable!!!

Compared to an RPA or Barnard, you will find the action is not as smooth when operating the bolt. This is not a criticism, as I regularly shot possibles with the Neilsen. It's just that the more you pay for things, the better finished they are or should be (IMHO). Like a BMW vs a Commodore.

If the New Barnard action is $1800, and an Old Omark action is $300, then I'd put the used Neilsen action around $500 - $700.

Then you add $ for the stock and barrel.

Cheers bartman,
So did mastin stocks come standard? Doesn't really suit shooting off sandbags, maybe some sort of 3" plate could be mounted off the rail.

Phil Mastin built all or most of the originally supplied Lloyd Neilsen's stocks to Lloyd's design & bedded quite a few of them too (with Araldite K138). Lloyd did the final bedding tapering or preloading himself.

hi sixmill , i bought a nielson rifle 2 years ago to convert to a open f class rifle - but it just shoots too good to pull apart , so i used my omark action instead to build my 6.5x47 open open .
my nielson rifle is fitted with a maddco stainless 28 inch barrel in 308 cal . still has original wooden stock with adjustable cheeckpiece fitted , im currently shooting the new dwyer 155gr & i must say its good enough for me as it ussually shoots a 53 out of 55 // 63 out of 66. i did get a 65 from 66 droping one point - proberly me !.
action closes & opens much much better than my omark does . these take the same bolt head im sure .
i only paid $450 for complete rifle without scope .
if u dont want the action im up for another one to build my next project from .
from what i gather of these rifles they seem to be the DUCKS NUTS .
