If I were you, I would check out which rifle ranges will permit you to shoot that calibre before you build one. Most long distance ranges are under the control of the NRAA & restricted to a maximum centrefire calibre of 8 mm.

I believe Barnard make them as do Stiller and several other manufacturers. Getting the action isn't the problem...most gunsmiths should be able to supply you one. But depending on your intended usage the places you can use it may be limited.

I also shoot at the Belmont SSAA and there are no problems with calibers.
I've always wanted a 338 lapua so it will be my pet project for 2009. I couldnt find the price for the Barnard actions so if anyone has an idea :)
I will be looking at purchasing a barrel from TSE in Everton Park so the action is the hardest for me to find at this stage.

Contact John Giles at PSECO in Brisbane. He imports Stiller actions from the States. They have a few actions that would be suitable for target shooting, hunting or 'tactical' purposes. I have one of the Stiller Python actions in my F Open rifle and am very happy with it. I'm not anti-338 Lapua Magnum- I used to own one. Big bang...big fun. You will be severely restricted where you'll be able to use it though. Not sure what range the SSAA range at Belmont goes to but that 338 is wasted closer than 800m. Just my opinion. Stiller's website is viperactions.com

I would go the Barnard on Steroids as the parts should be able to be sourced easily in the future if needed.

As for the rifle being a waste of time closer than 800m and not being able to fire it on SOME ranges would not stop me having one if I could afford. Get the job done and take it to the/a range and just see how many criticts jump at an invitation to massage the trigger of such a MAN's rifle......NOTE..this was said by an exclusively 5.56mm shooter.

Cheers

Kieth Hills is the Australian distributor for Barnard, He may have one in stock or it would be a phone call from him and you'll have one.

With the 338 sized Barnard action, you can also get an incert for the bolt head , which enables you to use 308 size cases.

Cheers
Paul

ps I just commited myself for another Barnard Model P action, I like em, great finnish, simple 3 lever trigger and strong.

PPS Remember to get the trigger lightening springs when you order your action

Hi Simon

If Barnard's were as cheap as Mauser's , I would be as bad as you.

Big Ricky,

I have a Remington 700p in .338 which are not hugely hard to come by theses days. They can be picked up for around 2k and for that money shoot very very well straight out of the box, much to my surprise.

Being the person that I am, it will in the new year go in to the mod shop to have a MTU profile Krieger added, Jewel Trigger and and Badger FTE muzle break. I have taken the oem stock wich is HS Precision off and replaced it with an AICS stock in black. Yes I have over capitalised on it, but god it looks amazing and is a joy to shoot.

Just another alternative to the Barnard. Dependant on your budget there is always the SAKO, which iss a dream to shoot.

flem100, I did think about purchasing a Remy 700 .338 Lapua but have read some articles and meassges form other buyers that they had problems with the barrel. How did your rifle shoot standard ?

Bigricky,

Yes I have read the same, but experienced something quite the opposite. When I first shot it at 100m, to zero in I hit the fist shot a little high from my poa, then I thought I totally missed the second and third shots. It was only when I had a closer look that I found that I was keying the shots and not missing at all. That makes for less than .25 moa which is plenty fine for what I am looking for...

Having said that, I have a krieger ready to go on it once I have some time. I simply prefer a heavier profile.

Ben
