223 barrel twists

#1 Postby FrankW » Fri Jan 12, 2024 8:24 am

Hi all
Will a twist of 1:9 be fast enough to shoot berger 80grain projectiles in .223?
Cheers

Hornady recommend 1:7 for their 80gr ELDs though they will shoot in a 1:8 and I have used them at 900m.

9 twists will handle 75 amax and 80 smk, both will get you pretty good performance

As comments above, would recommend a 8 twist or faster.
Depends on your achieved MV but my 9twist 223Rem puts projectiles sideways through paper at 100 if they are above 69grain
Run the numbers on Berger's stability calculator

No you need a 8T or faster .. A 9Twist will handle 68,s 69,s and 70 gr pills no problem and maybe72,s if you can get them ,but you are pushing the envelope at 75 grs . Will tumble Twist and be unstable . shot thousands of 68,s and 69,s in the 1980,s out of a 9 Twist Tobler and was great . Using 8 Twist Tikka,s and Kreiger now and they stabilise 80 VLDs, 80 gr Sierras , 80.5 and 82,s and everything less down to 55 grs. ... A member in club has a 7 Twist Swan and will stabilise even heavier projectiles . Stay with a MINIMUM 8 Twist .. Mauserjr
