308 win 125gn Speer good for Hunting

#1 Postby loneranger » Sun Oct 29, 2023 4:23 pm

I am playing around with my trusty 308 Win hunting rifle and looking for a new projectile for medium small & game. For years I have been using 125gn Nosler Balistic Tips - they were very accurate and devastating on medium game. I mean it was like they were hit by lightning, however over the past several years I have had quite a few occasions where the animal walk/runs for 10-20m before falling over. Most of the shots were well placed so upon talking to a few gun shop owners, they advised me that the Yanks have made the jackets harder on these projectiles, so I am looking for a replacement.

I have tried Berger Hunting pills, Hornady and other brands, but none were very accurate. Someone recently recommended 125gn TNT Speer projectiles, as apparently they are accurate and great for varmints and medium game.

Does anyone have any experiences with these pills and if so can you share them ? Also if anyone has any other 308 Win recommendations for medium game, love to hear them.

Thanks guys...

Highly recommend the 125 TNT speers! ... I was using Federal Tactical/Premium factory ammo which has the 130gr Speer Hollow points ... basically the same as the 125 TNT (big opening / hollow point) .. They are devastating / explosive on all game. It was/is my go-to ammo/proj for my 308.

I bought some 125 TNTs to replicate the Federal Ammo when it wasnt available. It would shoot just as well and was explosive on small / med game. I used BM2 and 2208.

I stopped reloading for the 308 after stocking up on that 130gr federal ammo.
Regards,
Jez

From first hand experience DON'T USE THE 125 TNT. The batches are hit and miss. I has some that would pencil though like a full metal jacket and found another shooter who had the same experience. I enen went to the extent of trimming the nose and opening the tip and they still wouldn't expand. I had used them in 22, 243 and 257 with really good results but it wasn't the case with the 125. Yes they were very accurate and well priced but now only get used for punching paper.

Try a nosler 110gr varmagedon or a sierra 135gr hollow point varminter which is like a whistling bucket

I have some 110gn Varmagedons so I might try them. I have tried 135gn hollow points but they were super inaccurate in my rifle, so no good.
Thank you for your posts guys, much appreciated. Mistit I'll review you pm.

Ant other feedback out there on these projectiles ?

I can second BATattacks comments. I used his rifle with the ammo that had been meplat trimmed on game. Multiple good solid hits at 80 yards out to 250 and straight through like shooting full metal jackets. I had only 2 kills with the rifle and they were both over 500 yards once the bullet had slowed. Varmageddons for me.

Most people prefer the speer 130gr HP. It has a far larger HP and it’s factory loaded in a few brands like the old Hog Stopper
