Hi to all,
I like most target shooters in Aus have a 7.62 Omark 44 that I briefly shot Fullbore with a few years ago. If I put a good quality scope and a Harris bipod would this be okay for F class. Can you buy scope rails for Omarks or do you have to get a gunsmith to make one? Could I use 175 smks in this rifle? What is the difference between std and open F class? thanks for any help.
regards
Tony.

Tony,
If your Omark has a good barrel, and is bedded well, it will do fine in F-Class Standard with a suitable scope and bipod. Most use the aluminium A type bipods in Victoria, but others think that Harris are good. Better to get a scope with 30mm tube if you can, but with a 20 to 30 minute sloping rail, a 1 inch tube will work. Try Pro-cal (our sponsor on home page) for a scope rail - or Geoff Grenfell (you'll need to register on this forum, then send him a Private Messaage).
If you want to use 175 SMKs then you can't shoot F-Standard. Apart from scope and rest, F-Standard rifles and ammunition have the same restrictions as for Target Rifle, so you'll need to use either Dyer or SMK 155gr bullets.
If you want to shoot in F-Open, you can use any projectiles (or any calibre up to 8mm), plus you can have a heavier barrel and rifle, and a much lighter trigger.
Hope this helps. . BTW what State are you from?
Alan

Hi Tony
Your OMARK will be fine
I have seen rails attached to omarks. I think you just need to get a tapered base I would have it fitted by a competent G/smith
You can use what ever projectiles you like but be aware this will determine wether you want to classify for F-Standard or F-Open
F-Standard have restriction on ammo
155Gr projys I think generally what ever goes for Full bore is the same for F-Standard
Cheers

Alan and Raven have answered your question well.
I would like to add that, and as noted by others, F Standard is restricted to 155 gn projectiles in .308 cal ... you can also use 5.56mm (.223 win)and everything else conformes with Fullbore specs .. ie trigger weights etc. also you can use a bipod or front rest.
We have built a few Omark FS rifles now and they perform exceptionally well and a tapered scope rail is quiet easy to fit by any competent gunsmith.
With 155 SMK’s your 26 inch barrel will still give a velocity that is quite ok out to 1000+ yds.
With 175 SMK’s you will get out to 1300 yds if you wish to ever shoot long range F Class (with match rifle shooters)

Twist
hi has any one thought if this is an old Omark it will have a 13 of 14 twist the 13 twist will be marginal to stabalise the 175gr in a 26" barrel length you will not get enough velocity and if it is a 14 twist barrel it WILL NOT stabalise the 175gr Sierra. i dont know how you can push a 175gr Sierra in 30 cal out of a 13 or 14 tiwst 26" barrel fast enough to make 1300 yards i think your dreaming. i would try the Dyer and Sierra 155gr and when you wear the barrel out then if you are staying with 308 fit a 12 twist barrel so you can then use the 175gr

good point .. i was assuming it was a 1:12 twist, to be honest i would never have thought of the possibility it may be 1:14
I should not assume anything ... nor should you
A 1:12 will be ok at 1300yds.. no problem at all.
My own .308 rifle is a 1:11 twist 26" it shoots 155 SMK's very well and 175 SMK's or 185 VLD's out at 1300 yds with no problem and excellent accuracy
