7mm copperheads ??

#1 Postby GSells » Thu Feb 24, 2022 9:01 pm

Hi All, has anyone tried the 180 Vld Copperheads and the 168's? Are they just as good as the Berger Vld's? Regards Graham

I tried some 180's when they were first developed, you need a shorter chamber throat than required for the Bergers but they shot well. So depending on your chamber throat.

I have shot them and I found them to be very good. I would rate them as good as Berger.

Thanks, I’ve got enough 180’s vld’s and hybrid . Apparently Ken doesn’t have any jackets atm for 180’s . I need some 168’s for the short to mids. I’ll get a couple of boxes and shoot em at some prize meets and see how they go ? Thanks heaps!

Was that the earlier version? I know earlier ones were very short but the newer 180gn is only marginally shorter bearing surface than the 180 hybrids. When measuring and batching, they were more consistent than the Bergers and shoot extremely well, with similar BC at 1000yd to the 180 Hybrids. You do have to load a little more powder than hybrids to get same velocity, as they dont seem to build as much pressure.

Rod , May have been the 178’s ? Anyway have got my 168’s and shall do some load development. They look like they will shoot if that means anything!! They look very similar to the 168 vld’s! I’ll post some group work at 100 with some chrony data if things work out . Ken even gave me an extra ten for “ die warmers “! I reckon they will shoot and if we can . We should support locally made !

G 1 bc copper heads .625 , .628 for bergers .

Below , can u tell which is which ? Berger left and copperheads right .

Ok prelim group work at 100 m ‘s . Conditions, bit windy ! Ok so I started with 168 vld Col ( Cartridge overall length) of 3.182” . This was way too far off the lands with couple touching then throwing another 2 apart vertically at about 2 moa . So went 3.224 “ ( got no idea how far off the lands !) Col .
3 shots went pretty much hole through clover leaf . Looked like it could go another 5 thou longer . Gave my $50 Lee die set seater 1/4 turn . This netted 3.245 “ Col . And it threw it again ! So back to 3.230 “ Col and happy ! Haven’t put a chrony on yet as it a just preliminary tuning at this stage !

Hopefully I’ll give ‘em a run at Dalby next Saturday if Life permits? Shall chrony it there after the meet?
284 win 52.6 2209 , cci 200 primers .

Im still fine tuning a load in my 284 but the 188 Copperheads are very consistent in their manufacture and the only other feedback is that on my rifle at least, they are doing well with a big jump (1.1mm and counting) so far

Ok the 100 m results are in ! Brux .284 w ( the blue meanie ) . Indicating 4.8 SD over 6 shot sample from a clean bore . The Brux needs a few shots before it comes on song and you can see this in the group work below . You can see the 3 shot clover leaf and then it just come on song and nearly hole on hole for the next 3 ? Or it’s me worming up and grouping better ! I believe it’s the first!

Just need an unsuspecting Icfra target at 600 yds and mercilessly wack the x ring !!
Watch this space !

So far a thumbs up for me ! Need to put to the test at 600 yds now ! hope Wilddog doesn’t want his barrel back ! Be 2000 on it at least at a guess ! Still borescopes ok ! 8)
