Lapua Scenar-L 155’s Load Development

#1 Postby Rogue22 » Fri Jun 03, 2022 7:49 pm

Evening all,

Does anyone have any experience with load development for 155gr Scenars? I’ve been playing around with them a bit and best I can get them to shoot (100m testing) is a 0.55 moa group with SD around 6 @3020 fps.
Currently running 45.2gr 2206H and have tried seating depths in 0.003’ increments from 0.010’ jump to 0.040’ jump. Bartlein 1:11 twist barrel throated long for the Scenars.

Would like to try and tighten it up a bit as I need all the help I can get!

I don’t believe it’s a rifle or reloading practices issue as I have a juggernaut load which shoots 0.27 moa with SD of 3.

Scenar load will be for club shoots (gotta save the yellow boxes!) and regional shoots where there is no F/TR.

As above I have tried and spent several days developing these for my throated 308 and they either like to be touching the lands or 50 thou off and I had a load worked best for AR2206 was 46.2g and AR2208 was 46.3g and they shot under quarter inch groups consistently, also used Palma Lapua brass and Normal Lapua brass same results.
Hope that helps and yep ran pretty much 3100 out of a Bartlein 1/10 twist barrel.

Yeah that definitely helps mate, I haven’t jammed them yet but that was going to be my next test, I might load a dummy round jammed then go back to the powder charge and go a bit higher this time.
Im only running 45.2 and that’s with Lapua palma brass.

When you say stick then on the lands, do you mean just touching or properly jammed?

I’ve always found the Jam and then started 10 or 20 thou in from there.

For context, the first photo is a powder charge test with the jugs seated 0.010 from jam (didn’t bother with a seating depth test), and the second is the Scenars at 45.2gr 06H at 0.010 from Jan and then 0.003 seating depth increments from there.
Rifle definitely likes the jugs, but as I posted earlier I need a 155 load for club shoots and comps where there is no F/TR

Ok this is how I find jam many different ways to do it but this is how I do it.
Seat the projectile long in an unprimed/powdered case (by long I mean long enough so that the projectile is seated back by closing the bolt) then insert it into the chamber then close the bolt on it but you will need to apply some case lube to the projectile or it will jam into the lands.
I then eject it measure its length from base to ogive gives me a starting point, I do this at least five to six times to give me a consistent length.
I will then seat that projectile in the press at that length then permanent texter the projectile to see how far into the lands it touch's and then just keep repeating the process until it literally just touches the lands this is what I call my kissing point then I work from there, I have found it gives me the most consistency then I work either way from there.
I have found they like a hot load in my barrel but all barrels perform different but juggs in mine are the same they just shoot small groups :)

I've shot thousands of 155 Scenars and have always ended up around 18thou jump whenever I've tested seating depth. This is with VV N140 and 2206H.
