#1 Postby Barry T » Thu Nov 01, 2018 12:46 pm

I have a 6.5x55 swed in a modern action (savage action ) , the barrel is 30 inches long , 1.029 dia and 1 in 8 twist , I am using ar2209 powder , lapua cases , cci br2 primers , so far I am getting nice three hole group (1/4) touching with 42.3 grains , o.a.l is 3.335 in, the barrel has a very long throat ,have gone as high as 43.0 to 43.5 but groups where opening up and stringing . so any help would be great full .

Have you pressure tested to see what your upper limit is?
Reason I ask, is I used to load 142 smk with my 30" 8twist Tikka up to 46gr of 2209 before hitting pressure signs. Accuracy was at 45.3gr and got me 2940fps.

during load dev I did also find an accuracy node around 43gr with velocity around 2820 fps (30'' bbl) ... sounds similar to where you are at with a heavier pill.?

I have not tested the 147gr loads, so I cant help you with those, but just sharing my experience with a 30" bbl 6.5x55 (Tight neck and short throat also)

I don't have a heavy barrel 6.5x55 (Yet) Just a tikka t3 lite and actually load 42.5 of 2209 for the accuracy, think I went up to about
44 grn's but as you say accuracy opened up. I also used to load the 140 HPBT Hornady's with 46 grn's of 09 too. All you can do as Jez says load one round at a time to work out your upper limit as I haven't found any load data in a modern action either.
