FWIW, I have seen the humble 6BR shoot out to 1200y. At this distance it was not really competitive with a good 6.5 nor a 7mm. But it is am impressive cartridge for what it is.
Very good barrel life and low recoil if that is what you are after on a standard boltface.

A possible correction for my recommendation of a 6.5 Creedmoor. 2209 powder, with 140 grain pills, is almost perfect in a 30 inch barrel. Maybe not the best combination in a 24 inch barrel. BTW, moderate sized 6.5 cartridges will shoot out to 1500y.

Using a Creedmoor and a 7mm, the same powder 2209 can be used.
Just like a 223, 6BR, and 308 can all use the same powder - 2208.

I would not be going 223 unless a 223 bolt fact is already available. The advantage of a standard boltface is the huge range of cartridges available to suit it when you decide to make a change.

6.5mm is a good compromise, however I find components are thin on the ground. My experience was only with a 6.5x47 which I found a bit finicky.

So far I am a Dasher convert!!!!

If your only club shooting and the occasional OPM out to 600 do you really need anything bigger??

Very kind conditions.

Mirage running from the right. About 1/2 point.
Shot when it ran, stopped when the mirage stopped.

First half of the shoot hung in the bottom left of the X-ring, altered into the centre at the end.

Gentlemen - thanks for all the advice. I've got multiple options here I can have a think about!

To those of you suggesting a 308 or 30 of some description - what about a 30-06 improved? The long neck would allow a fairly wide range of projectiles to be used and still be out of the donut area. Using heavy for calibre pills it would also look pretty good for wind drift while staying under range limits if I ever decided to travel out of NSW.

To those with suggestions of other cals - can hornady projectiles be shot competitively at a club or opm level without sorting? If the consensus is yes, that opens up quite a few options as if found most LGS's have a good range of these on the shelf.

Thanks again,
Alex

Personally, now I'm shooting F/TR, a 308 running 155gr to 175gr will be my practice rig. Recoil management wise and everything else its just easy. I'm going to do another 7mm08AI for Fly and FO use once I've got my 308 sorted.

30/06 AI is an excellent running mate to the 7's. It will shoot any of the 155 grain bullets very well & is right at home with the 185/190 match bullets. I have shot one with great success, mine has a 10" twist 1.250" parallel barrel. This rifle holds two club range records.

Hi Ben, a truly awesome achievement in your 60.10. Agree the Dasher is a contender however only behind a great marksman such as you.

Actually just goes to prove a 6dasher can make any mug look good with a bit of luck thrown in.

For those stuck without components, why not try Reloadinginternational.com then you can get pretty much anything you want from USA and they help with the paperwork.

Does one need to buy in large quantities to make this viable, Rod?

Looking at buying from RI, problem is 7mm pills work out about $1.05 per bullet, are people willing to pay ???

Probs is that we don't have decent supply here. So for a OPM or queens, is worth it to pay?

How much are the next shipment of 7mm Bergers going to be anyway?

1.05 might work out worth it to keep shooting.
