Scope Advise - 900yd MOA

#1 Postby darrward » Mon Jul 23, 2018 5:38 pm

Hi All

I've been looking to find a decent but sub $2k scope for F Class shooting that I can take from 300 to 900 yards so I'm looking at something I'm guessing with at least a 65 MOA elevation adjustment (using a 20 MOA picatinny rail) and at least 24x magnification

Feature wise I'm also looking for FFP and a basic MOA style reticle

Now I can find the spec's pretty easily, the Vortex Viper PST Gen II FFP for example but the MOA reticle has the extra windage 'noise' under the crosshairs in the scope which I'd like to avoid

Any recommendations?

Darren

Sightron SIII 6-24x50 FFP
MOA 2 Ret has a floating dot
But also the noise you refer too - worth looking at though.

It’s been said many times before,Buy once cry once.
Having just put a night force completion 15-55 FCR1 scope on my Tikka 223 I can very highly recommend it. Wish I had done it years ago. Sorry it’s not sub 2k but worth it.

Actually this one isnt too bad, the MOA marking are just on th crosshairs for elevation and windage which is what Im looking for

When I said 'noise' I meant the horizontal windage lines appearing below the basic crosshair one

Ah yep no worries
I use the SFP version on my rifles, have a FFP but haven’t mounted it on anything yet.

$3k is a bit much now but the FCR-1 reticle does meet what I'm looking for

The elevation says 55 MOA though so zeroed at 300 yards that seems like it might be a bit low on adjustment when out at 900 yards even with the 20 MOA rail correct?

55 MOA is more than enough to get you to 900 ( good for 1000 actually ) using a 20 MOA taper on the rail.
900 is normally around 21MOA above 300 ( give or take 1 MOA ) 1000 is about 26.
All based on about 2970 or so MV and 155 Bergers or 2156 Sierras.

Thanks Barry

I'm attaching it to a Howa Bravo 308 Win with 26" barrel, looking at the ballistics calculator on the base load looks like 2700fps which works out at 34 MOA approximately elevation diff between 300 and 900 yards

The 20 MOA rail will make it possible but there's so little negative elevation adjustment with those ballistics or do I have it wrong?

Anyone have thoughts on the Bushnell Veracity 5-25x50 SCR MOA ?

Has FFP and 64 MOA elevation adjustment, 30 MOA windage adjustment

Cost looks pretty good ;)

but 30 MOA windage seems a concern?

Not sure where you are located, but temperature humidity and elevation will play a big difference in moa adjustment between 300 - 900 yrds. Basically the colder it is the more moa you need and vice versa. There is always going to be compromises when buying on budget, my opinion is,firstly you want quality of glass to look nice and clear with no shadow, secound on the wish list is for f class shooting is repeatability and a lot of windage and elevation adjustment. 3rd being magnification range. Going in with a FIXED budget means you can only look at scopes that fall within that range, where as you might be better in starting looking at the highest end scopes to see what they have and then work out what you are prepared to comprise on, to be around the price area you want to spend. Ask anybody who has been shooting for a few years and owns a few different rifles how many scopes he has that doesn’t use any more due to various things.
Just my opinion.
Wish I had been given more advise back in the day, and asked more questions. Good luck.

Forgot to mention, you will also require good eye relief, parallax adjustment, and watch the weight if shooting competition f class.

Hey Mozzie,
I'll start an argument here
First priority should be repeatability/reliability.(no good clearly seeing how bad your scope is)
My suggestion would be the sightron scopes, I have had a couple of them and would still have them accept I was given the opportunity to buy some NF comps at a good price.

Darren,
With a scope which has 55 MOA adjustment and your requirement is say 26 MOA at 900, this leaves you 29 MOA to play with.
Ideally you would set the scope to Zero at 300 at around 10 MOA up from the bottom limit. This leaves you 19 at the top over 900 yards. This would probably be ok for 1000 yds as well,l leaving you about 10 or so MOA from top limit.
However to do this you would need to Zero at 300 on a 20 MOA rail and see where the scope sets up. Then modify the taper on the rail to get what you want. ( 0.002" is close to 1 MOA so it's easy to calculate the new taper )
2700 f/s MV is a bit slow --you will not get 1000- yds and be stable with this. 900 will be ok. To get 1000 you need to be at least 2900 and even then atmospherics play a major part , to be safe under all conditions 2970 is better.
All this is based on using either Berger 155 or Sierra 155 ( 2156)
If you wish to avoid this sort of thing happening then go to a 65 MOA scope ( at least )

Nightforce BR 12x42x56 I have these in my Dasher 6mm Nd 7x57 AI and have no problems with 1000yds . Have a look at magnum sports prices
Like Barry says zero at 300 setup scope so the elevation is as low as possible eg my 6mm is at 5moa at 300

Ditto on what Bill says above, I also use a Nightforce BR regularly out to 900 metres
no problems. Will even stretch out to 1000m but not to much elevation left.

cheers,
Chris
