front rest question

#1 Postby saum2 » Sat Aug 24, 2013 11:32 pm

How tight do you fill the front bags on your rest? If too tight can this cause problems with elevation?

Tight enough to fill but still able to compress with a finger slightly. Too tight your gun can bounce on it and cause vertical

Further to the original question, I use a Farley front rest and when shooting my 284 it gradually settles clockwise on the bag and usually needs adjusting during a stage.
The bag seems to be packed fairly tight.
How can I stop it ?

Tim,

(1) Adjust the rifle every shot (I do)

(2) Offset the forend to the left. It's the kick back from recoil torque that causes what you're experiencing. That seems to be reduced if the left hand side of the stock has more to bite into.

(3) Use a lighter recoiling calibre.

Thanks for the reply John,
However I was wanting to avoid the adjustment once set up.
Can the front rest bag be made with 4 separate cells to stop the settling I'm experiencing?
Not sure of the legalities.
