or another option for those who may wish to evaluate, test and improve long range wind reading and shooting skills, is to shoot 1000yd BR in the traditional IBS "blind" style.

additionally, not a bad way to get a realistic perspective of the accuracy standard of any long range rifle.

I can see how confusing it would be for new comers. 25 lanes with 50 targets, plus the splash plate for sighters! That is a lot to look at, not to mention ensuring you shoot your target and not the other one that is on your number!

With fly shoots and 1000yd BR, Once you get there it all makes sense and it works well. Just turn up with about 50 rounds of ammo and all your F class gear except your mat and you will fit right in.

it is interesting that over the years that Fly shooting has been around, many of the blokes with their names on the trophys and records are "wind readers", eg Matt Paroz, Les Fraser, Chopper reid and others...even though it is available as a strategy, machine gunning does not always work.

You get your practice "detail" with basically unlimited shots in ten minutes, then 5 scoring details that count, which are only allowed to use a maximum of 3 x "sighters",(all must be onto the sighter steel plate) plus the 5 scoring shots onto the paper Fly target.
At the end of the day, you have 6 targets to take home. The very first one was just practice so nobody's else needs to see it......whereas the 5 x scoring targets get independently scored and marked by some poor bugger , scores tallied for the Officials, and then they get posted onto the "wailing wall", one on top of the other as each detail is scored and recorded.

From what I saw, old hand Rod is spot on. Just leave your mat at home and take your F Class gear and 50 rounds, and it all falls into place when you get there.
On my first try, the majority were done with their 8 shots for each detail in 2-3 minutes ! It was the F Classers being more deliberate and taking their time.
Lots of testosterone released when the RO calls out "......starting NOW"
