STAWELL LONG RANGE PM

#1 Postby John E » Tue Oct 04, 2005 9:11 am

Hi everyone,
first of all, congratulations to all the winners at S.A. Queens --- it sounded like the conditions were pretty difficult.
Is anyone going to Stawell next weekend? 120 shots to count over 2 days at 1000, 1100, 1200 yds. See flyer on this site. F Open and F Std are catered for.
I have not shot over 11 and 1200 before, and I don't know if my 155s will go that far --- maybe I'll have to pull the trigger a bit harder :?:
Anyway, I hope to see some of you there.

Hi John

The 155's will be on their limit for those ranges if you have a 1:12 or there abouts you will be better using 175 SMK's.

And yes the SA Queens was difficult with switching winds and some very strange conditions. As usual it was the luck of the draw and you either got bad, very bad or 'strange' to deal with.

Congrats to all the winners , you deserved it 8)

Stawell pm

Thanks Tony
I've already loaded 150 rounds of 155s. I think that I have enough 185 gn Lapuas and 190 gn Sierras to shoot the two days if it comes to that.
The range will be open all day Friday to enable us to find our zeros, so if the 155s don't work I will try the heavier bullets, but I would then have to shoot open, which would be o.k.
I will have a look tonight and see if I can find suitable loads for them.

Good Luck John .. if you have never shot those range before it can become addictive

BTW .. at the last match rifle shoot we shot F Class and i tried 185 VLD's in my 308 (i normally use them in my .300) but they offered nothing over the 175 SMK's. I ran out of elevation using them as i could not get the velocity in my 26 inch barell and had to use my 1st mill dot. (i have 52 moa availiable and needed 54 to get out to 1200 on the day) with the 175's i dont need the aditional moa as they are quicker.

Most mach rifle shooters use the 190's or 200's but they realy stoke them up and use very heavy 32" barells, personally im not prepaired to go past safe limits with my ammo and allways keep them within the published maximums.

The other problem you may have using 190 or 200's is case space. I have a very long throat and can handle even 200's without any problem however in my other 308 it has a palmer chamber and a short throat causing problems with 175's if i use 2208 (2206 has less bulk and gives more space in the case for the extra projy length)

Hope some of this helps.

Thanks again for the information Tony. My 155s are running at around 2950 fps, so they may be alright. Both of my 308s have 30" barrels and the chambers are throated out, so they will handle the 190s in that respect. I will take them to try on Friday and see what they will do. Thanks again.

Me again John

Give them a try no harn done on a practice day :D

Ive had no real sucess beyond 1100 with 155 smk's even with your 2950 velocity my balistics software tells me you will be around 1070 ft/s at 1200yds .. and thats subsonic  they will still get there but they will be soft and open up in spread as they go through the transonic barrier.

the 175's at 2780 ft/s will be around 1120 ft/ps at 1200yds

the 190's at 2700 ft/s will be around 1140 ft/ps at 1200yds

either will be fine as long as you keep the velocitys up and keep them supersonic :D

Tony,
how much 2208 do you think I should put behind the 190s and 185s in a Norma case?

John

I only use Lapua cases but Norma is a high quality brand but unsure what the case capacity is.

For reference .. in my 26" barell

I use 46.3 behind 155's

44.5 (2208) behind 175's

and 43.5 (2208) behind 185's and 190's

as stated before i allways keep under the maximum published loads from ADI yet i do know many who are putting more behind those 190's to keep high velocitys.
