Model 59 - The newest CG design front locking action

Hello all,

It is time to announce that the new design from Robert Chombart (CG), in association with Woody Engineering, Western Australia, has begun prototyping this week.

The basic prinicples of the action are:

1. Universal high strength tool steel insert that fits all of the action models, diameters, materials etc. This insert locks together the barrel and bolt locking lugs, sort of like the adapter on an Omark, but integrated inside the action in a permanent fixture. This insert material is the same super strong stuff that the CG INCH is made from - made only in Western Europe, it is also used in making turbine engine shafts in passenger aircraft!! It has over 200,000 psi tensile strength, adn has a hardness of 52 HRC, where the typical 4140 is only 32 HRC and 100,000 psi .

2. Any typical material can be used for the receiver body, the prototypes will be made in 4140 steel and 7075 aluminium. The aluminium material in particular will be interesting to see how much weight can be saved. Other material choices could be 6AlV4 Titanium, or 304 Stainless Steel etc.

The insert is a press fit and glued into the receiver and lock pinned so it is permanent. Only the designer and the makers know how this insert is fitted, to make sure nobody attempts to remove it.

3. The action has various models, including single shot, magazine feed and floorplate. Mags will be Accuracy International units, floorplates will be from well known makers in the US most likely.

4. All of the actions have the same basic structure, only differences in machining making for different models.

5. It is a front locking, delta lug (3 radiused lugs like the CG INCH), with 22mm bolt diameter (also same as the INCH). The lugs are inside the diameter of the bolt, much like an Omark, Barnard etc.

6. Is based on the Remington 700 footprint, but IS NOT a clone. There is little to be gained from persuing such an old design these days. This means the M59 accepts a R700 trigger, and will fit into a R700 stock (the 35mm diameter unit will anyway).

7. The single shot variations will be made in 38mm diameter, as well as 35mm if someone wants them.

8. The Model 59 fits into the gap between a full priced target action, and one that is mass produced, needing to be reworked to shoot accurately. The M59 is obviously made on the same machinery that makes the CG INCH, so there wont be any issues with threads and concentricity that plague other designs and makers.

9. The barrel tenon is M26 x 1,5mm size (so far). We went for the finer pitch than 16 TPI which is common to get more strength in the tenon area. It is slightly larger than the common 1.000" tenon of the US makers. The tenon also has two barrel registers, the same as the CG INCH - where the thread only tightens the barrel into the action, but DOES NOT center the barrel within the action. The registers are at the front and rear of the tenon, thereby centering it.

10. The insert also has an optional recoil lug, which is machined integral to the insert in one piece. Meaning; no joins, no movement and no issues with alignment with the action abd barrel. The lug will have a tapered shape, to allow it to fit better within traditional bedding.

What the Model 59 isn't:

1. It is not a clone of the R700

2. It has separately treated parts, so that the insert and the body can be finished BEFORE they are joined. For example, Stolle Panda's are made much like this, only they have no anodising, because the insert is glued in BEFORE it is machined. Ours are completed, THEN assembled, meaning the aluminium units can be anodised for protection. Therefore, it is NOT a copy of the Panda, or its method of manufacture.

3. It is not a copy of anything made anywhere. I wrote the criteria for the design, based on the needs of our customers. Robert then designed the action based on these criteria, from a blank piece of paper!!! The criteria are very long winded, so I won't write them here.

Finally got back to this thread! Just sent an email to chris about it.

Im thinking of turning my two centrefires (target and field) into one action, two barrels and more than likely two bolts will be needed (308 face and 223) Calibers are 22BR (7 twist for 90gr projectiles) for F open and 20 practical (20/223) for spotlighting. Two stocks, one scope and yeah its alot of work but would rather one well built custom rig rather than two semi customs. Ive explained more in my email to see if it will work or if Im being a bit too ambitious.

When will these actions be ready? I have a friend asking about actions to build a good hunting rifle on, something which will take Rem 700 type stocks, trigger etc.

There has been some big changes at actionclear and we have reassessed our goals and business plan.

As the Model 59 never got to a fully functional prototype we have decided that this will be put on hold until further notice. Due to recent demand, our full attention will be placed on the CG INCH.
