Wind Reading Training Software

#1 Postby pgcpty » Sat Sep 08, 2018 9:45 am

ANYONE WISHING TO IMPROVE OR HONE THEIR WIND READING SKILLS?
WindReader Header.jpg

After a long and unsuccessful search for a current tool to improve wind reading skills, for the past 2 years I and an associate Software Developer have been working on a new Wind Simulation product, WindReader (click on attachment above)

The extract below is reproduced with the permission of Australian Target Shooter Magazine (ATR) and appeared in issue 136 September/October 2018

You can download WindReader at http://www.windreader.com for a free 30 day trail.
Both "Getting Started" and the User Manual are within the download under Help.

Try it, we welcome your feedback

I take it that it won’t work on a Mac?

Hi Brad,
It can be run on a Mac with a number of downloadable programs e.g.
https://www.howtogeek.com/187359/5-ways ... -on-a-mac/
I've not done this personally for WR although I have installed Oracle VM (Virtual Box) within my Win7 PC to run XP Pro for a couple of legacy design programs.
Hope this helps

Fun program, I nearly gave up as it took me 10 mins to get on the target! I turned on bullet drop well you have to click everything 1st but initially couldn't work out how to adjust the scope and didn't know where the bullet was meat to be hitting  How to change the wind profile is a little confusing other then that it works well! Now to add a mirage filter over the target and I could skip going to the range altogether :?

Hi UL1700

Glad to hear you got underway with WR. We're looking right now at making some YouTube tutorials to help.
For any shot fired the elevation and wind deflection are shown under Vertical MOA and Wind MOA on the front Panel
Also the Turret adjustments simulate a real scope in direction

This group was shot using the 9-8-7 Program @ 4 mph by watching the flags and aiming off

Hi,

Here is an idea, can we have a selectable time delay between shots? We all have to reload and whilst I try not to cheat is is easy to let off a couple of shots quicker then I can in real life and sometimes I double click out of habit. Also I can reliably get a 60 with 10 with some very quick mouse clicking! Anyway being new to the F class game I think it is a really good tool.

Cheers,

James.

P.s. If anyone tells you F class is easy give them a crack at this, then ask them to do it on the Range!

Hi UL1700,
Thanks for your suggestion, we're taking it on notice
We'll need to think this through because say a 5 or 10 second trigger delay interval between shots can’t affect the wind strength/flag position time change sequence because we're also endeavouring to train for optimum trigger release with respect the shot timing.
Mind you there are those that specialise in machine gun technique and pay little attention to the wind which I don’t believe to be an all conditions winning strategy.
Then there are those shooters that watch the flags carefully and wait patiently only firing when they know the result will very probably be a centre bull or X. These are the ones that win a lot :D

Cheers
Peter

I had a play with this the other night and have 1 problem with it being the 0 flags at the bottom. 0 flags to the top IMO would give more of a feeling of looking down range.

Hi Mick,

I don’t quit follow you, can you post a screen shot with a note so I can better understand?
Alternately, Skype if you have it enables screen sharing which is great for sharing/discussing issues.
PM me and I'll give you my Skype contact details
Cheers
Peter
PS Leaving for O'seas Thu 27/9 back 20/10 with limited opportunities to respond while away.

Sorry it is just the way I look at the software.
To me it would make more sense if the target was the 0 flag, numbered back to the range you are simulating. So the number represents the mound the flag is situated at. Those who shoot on a fixed firing point or PRS would more than likely prefer the method you use.
Another option would be to simulate ranges where the flags are situated midway between the firing points.
I am still playing around with this and will be trying to map out a simulation of our normal range conditions, but it will probably end up 1000+ lines long. lol.

Hi Mick,

OK, now I see what saying.

The layout being Mound at the bottom of the pane and the Butts at the top is based on precedent including range layout plans and wind defection diagrams which invariably show the deflection increasing with distance i.e. from bottom to top of the illustration
.
We'd shown the prototype product to many full bore and F Class shooters during development without any adverse reaction to our Panel layout insofar that standing behind the mound what you see from a vertical perspective is the mound below the butts.
Not perfect, not right, Just precident/convention.

Appreciate your interest and input.

Cheers
Peter
