Old ranges?

#1 Postby dhv » Tue Feb 19, 2013 5:26 pm

How would one go about finding out the locations of old rifle ranges with a view to reactivating them?

Particularly in the areas of NSW just outside the ACT?

Any ideas?

Check with your state rifle association.
They should know of someone who is knowledgable on the history and whereabouts of past rifle clubs.
For instance the R C I am a member of had a club but on wheels and they moved it to each range so shooters could have a beer before and after they shot but not while they were shooting.
I purchased a book on R C's in QLD and there was a club in the town I live in.
It was formed in 1948 but closed down in 1962. The book also lists several clubs in QLD that had 1 mile long ranges.
By the way I am trying to get a rifle club up and running here in Isisford, it will be a long windy affair.
Cheers
Paul

Try Trove,,online old newspapers, in the old days most papers reported rfile club results. There is some great reading.

I used it to help locate the first Hamilton rifle range.

Cheers
Danny.

Ps,,beware it can be very addictive. I had someone show me a cup that had been in their family since 1885. I was able to ring them back in half an hour with the scores.

YASS, closed many years ago, some 5 + years back there was a guy from the SSAA trying to get it reopened, but nothing heard since.

BUNGENDORE, Closed by Landowner. "Rolph'y' knows the story.

QUEANBEYAN, Underneath "Cooks Estate" housing.

TARAGO, I have tried but not able to find its location.

BRAIDWOOD, I have been told roughly where it was, just at northen end of town before the highway turns sharp right into main street.

Greta, Hunter valley.

I grew up almost next door to it. An 800yd range with about 15 - 20 target frames in the butts (from memory) , EX Millitary. Google earth shows the butts as 90m wide
I'll try a post the KMZ, placemark.
Edit:-
No can do.
Go to -
Longatude - 151°22'11.30"E
Lattatude - 32°42'24.22"S

Now private property on Tuckers Lane between Greta & Nth Rothbury.

Mick.
