Exporting and importing ammunition - QLD only

#1 Postby Tim L » Fri Jul 10, 2015 12:59 pm

I came across a change to the process recently and in digging into it discovered not many are aware (that includes some of those involved in the system).

It's taken a while to straighten out the new requirement, which is actually pretty simple, just an extra form for us lucky QLD'ers.

For those unaware, I've put this together.

QLD – new process for going abroad with ammo (more coming back actually).
No change for firearms

A new step in the process for exporting and importing ammunition has been put in place for QLD’ers. Hopefully we’re going to see this as an interim measure only (they are hoping to get the legislation changed), but for now this is how it stands.

When you contact WLB for the B709 you will be informed you need a permit from Dept of Natural Resources and Mining (DNRM). The permit is a QLD only requirement and IS NOT your authority to import. You need to send the permit with your B709 application to WLB to get your B709.

Also a QLD only requirement, you need a DNRM permit to export. Customs DON’T need it for the RGP, but as a QLD’er you need it to be compliant. Although you would still be able to get the RGP to export, not having the DNRM permit would be a breach of the Explosives Act.

Permits, and instructions are available here

Once you have these permits, the process is the same. There is a bit of info on the WLB site that they hope to add to

https://www.police.qld.gov.au/programs/weaponsLicensing/acquiringWeapons/importation.htm

Permits are required for Live ammunition only. Ammunition components still need a B709 in their own right but no DNRM permit is required.

On the Plus side, Customs provided this.

As a matter of interest, the Department of Immigration and Border Protection is working closely with the Attorney-General’s Department to develop legislative resolutions to ease some of the Commonwealth’s administrative burden on Australian residents returning to Australia with their firearms and ammunition – hopefully we will have something by the end of this year.
