Re: NECK CLERANCE - IS IT IMPORTANT?

Bruce,

I follow the norm and express neck clearance as the diametric total, such as, chamber 0.321 less neck 0.320 equals clearance 0.001.

Regards,
John.

Re: NECK CLERANCE - IS IT IMPORTANT?

To this point, there has been nothing to suggest that low clearance, such as 0.001, 0.002 or 0.003, improves accuracy. In fact, low clearance could be detrimental (Pete Smith). I have thought that the larger the clearance, the greater the blow-back, with consequential change in chamber pressure. Thi...

Re: NECK CLERANCE - IS IT IMPORTANT?

Keith, and no doubt proud of it. Pete, thanks for the best explanation of why NOT to have a very fine clearance, that I have heard. Let's agree that a 0.001 is out, but 0.002 is viable. Is a 0.002 clearance more consistent than a 0.004? What do the turners have to say? If you look at the SAAMI drawi...

Re: NECK CLERANCE - IS IT IMPORTANT?

Buffalo boys don't mind rough necks and take them as they please. Recon turning is for tossers, but insist that the hole is always the same. Some don't even wash!

If you see a box with dirty, shabby cases, it is likely you have encountered a buffalo boy. Beast advice, turn away.

NECK CLERANCE - IS IT IMPORTANT?

Hello All. Old wisdom says that neck clearance (NC) should be from 0.003 to 0.004. Why, I don't know. Only with very well turned necks could you claim to have consistent NC of 0.004, 0.003, 0.002 or 0.001. Which NC delivers the best consistency, and why? What do the buffalo boys (avowed non-turners)...

Re: If ballistics is a science ....

Hello Handbrake. Did you earn that name at your golf club? Can I suggest that at this early stage of your F Open career, you keep to the basics and take developments slowly. Neck turning is an acquired skill. There is much more to it than ripping a few thou off a case neck. Ruining 1 in 3, $2.50 cas...

Re: 2019 LRWC AND PALMA

By now, many of you will already be aware of what I set out below. But I think it is worthy of reproduction. On Day 1, Range 1, 800 yards, Australia came second to USA by 2 points. It then proceeded to win the remaining 5 Ranges. The biggest margin was 26, over GB, at the last Range, 1000 yards. All...

2019 LRWC AND PALMA

If you have ever wondered about the pre-eminence of coaches in team rifle shooting, look at Australia's dominant win. The returns achieved by our coaches placed them 1, 2, 3 and 4. How can that be beaten? Simply an outstanding victory which will be forever at the forefront of Australian Target Shoot...

Hello Frank and Peter. I'm with you, I'm a jumper. It's one of the polarising issues; jump or jam. Not much point in a debate, neither side will convince the other. Floaters take care of themselves. But I would like your views on this proposition. If you jump, it is likely that you will not need to ...

Re: AUSTRALIAN FCWC TEAM SELECTION

When I opened this topic, I was not aware of the topic "FCWC Captains" or of the opening post by Dave McNamara. Dave wrote, "...I would just like to say a huge congratulations to Both Dennis Shallis and Rod Mahon for their appointment..." No mention of Craig McGowan, of whom Dave...

Re: AUSTRALIAN FCWC TEAM SELECTION

There is a rumour that a little birdie claims that, while flying low and slow over a Furphy water tank, it heard murmurings that sounded like "..a palace coup..", "..who was supposed to tell Craig?", "..Board rubber-stamped coup decision..". The Captain is dead. Long li...

AUSTRALIAN FCWC TEAM SELECTION

Dear F Class competitors. The decision to select Rod Mahon as Captain of the Australian FTR Team for the 2021 FCWC at Bloemfontein must be the easiest decision any NRAA Board has ever made. Rod shot in the Team that finished 4th at Raton and Captained the Team to Silver at Connaught. Congratulations...

Re: HOW FULL IS A FULL CASE?

David, sorry about being obtuse, my comments about the soft seated flat base bullets related to the Wolfpup, not to your load. I take it that compressing slow burners when seating the bullet is par for the course, so I will develop my load in the usual way and not be concerned where the base is in r...

Re: HOW FULL IS A FULL CASE?

Hello David. It may be ok to soft-seat light, short, flat based 30 cal. bullets in that case, but would it work with BT Bergers? I am very interested that slow powders like a little compression. I have not used anything other than 2209 in my 7 RSAUM and my use of 2213 in my 284WIN did not involve co...
